SM Entertainment founder, Lee Soo Man presented a new business idea in form of a digital platform at SM TOWN Coex Artium in Seoul today.
The SM founder made two big announcements today – Firstly the launch of a brand new digital sound channel and secondly the launch of a new upcoming boy group.
He held a presentation called ‘SMTOWN: New Culture Technology, 2016’ to introduce a new digital sound public channel, “STATION.” As per the model new songs shall be released on a specific day of a week for an entire year. The newest platform shall see collaborations from international artists including the asian artists, singers and producers.
The first singer to launch her music on “STATION” shall be “Girls’ Generation” Taeyeon with her new song “Rain” scheduled for a release in February. The video teaser below was released at the event today, which will be the first release on the new channel “STATION.”
Lee Soo Man also went on to introduce the upcoming new boy group “NCT” at the event. The new boy group, “NCT” shall follow a project under which the members shall be launched and based at different cities around the world simultaneously. The boy band shall be located in multiple cities producing music that caters to the locals. They will first release a song as a group and then that song will be localized into local language for that particular city, apart from music catering to that city’s local tastes.

The band members will be divided into sub-units which will have a variety of collaborations within sub-units, and members can join and move around the sub-units freely. Also there will be no limit to number of members in NCT. The first sub-unit shall bring out their first release in spring this year. The second batch will be launched in Chinese cities moving onto South-east Asia and Latin America thereafter.
In the current era of cutting edge technology, SM has also announced a new app, “Rookies Entertainment” that undertakes fans participation into account for the creation of new artists. The company shall also launch an EDM (Electronic Dance Music) label “ScreaM Records,” apart from expanding into mobile business. They will also create “multi-channel network content” that combines audio and visual channels like a visual radio program.
Looking at the business model we can say that SM Entertainment is now truly going global as a music label!!!
