It’s finally October 31st! Happy Halloween to all Destination KPop India readers! Let’s celebrate this spooky holiday by listening to some of the creepiest ghost stories of KPop idols! Keep in mind that in Korean culture, “Superstition says if celebrities see a ghost, it means they′ll be really successful.”
Maknae Jinwoon described the following story while appearing on “We Got Married“:
“There were a lot of ghosts at the JYPE headquarters. It was during the time that we had a lot of events to attend early in our debut. We would normally sleep for 2-3 hours and go out and get our makeup done. But because we were tired, Seulong hyung and I crossed our arms and fell asleep.
BUT Seulong hyung kept saying that I was poking his side. He said, ‘Jinwoon ah. Stop poking me.’ But I was just still. Seulong hyung was also tired so he got angry and he told me, ‘I told you not to do it.’ But I couldn’t even use my arms at the time. Seulong hyung’s face then became pale. The room we were in was a piano room and there was a ghost underneath the piano. A baby ghost.”
In the 4th episode of TrendE’s “Apink News Season 3“, Apink members shared their stories about the ghost living in lead vocalist Namjoo’s room.
Former member Yookyung revealed,
“I heard a baby crying in Namjoo’s room. I think there’s a baby ghost living in her room.”
Maknae Hayoung added, “I saw the baby”, chilling viewers to the core. Lead dancer Naeun even desperately asked the staff members, “Please get us an exorcist.”
Baro had the following to say when asked about whether or not B1A4 had ever experienced a supernatural event:
“I think it′s true that there are a lot of ghosts in practice rooms and workrooms. I didn′t see a ghost myself, but I heard someone call my name when no one else was with me.“
CNU also backed up Baro’s story, and relayed another experience for good measure:
“Sandeul said he was practicing when someone sang the chorus to his song.“
You can listen to Taeyang‘s ghost story below, or maybe you should skip over it, if you want to sleep tonight.
T.O.P‘s iPod suddenly started playing by itself even though it was turned off, and this incident actually happened on the spot during filming.
According to Donghyun, he was often suffocated by a black ghost shadow in bed at night, who would be pressing onto him and strangling his neck. Because it happened so often, Donghyun told his mom to go into his room if she hears any strange noises coming from it.
Surely enough, the singer was yet again suffocated by the black ghost shadow. However, the instant his mom entered the room, the black ghost shadow disappeared. Donghyun felt relieved and thought that his life was saved. But just as his mom was walking out the room, Donghyun saw the black ghost shadow hiding behind his mum, staring at him.
Subin was once woken up in the middle of the night by a Lady Gaga ringtone. When she answered the phone, all she heard was muffled noises, so she hung up. She later remembered that she’s never downloaded a Lady Gaga ringtone.
EXO have a fair share of stories to tell! Former member Tao has claimed that he saw a ghost while showering.
Also, in a 2013 episode of “Beatles Code 2“, Baekhyun told the MCs and fellow guests Brown Eyed Girls about the time he was practicing in the basement hall of the SM Entertainment building.
Baekhyun said that while he was practicing, he heard a thump against the wall. At first, he thought he was just hearing things. Ten minutes later, he heard the same thump and he got scared. He then began hearing sounds come from the bathroom.
At that exact moment of the story, one of the MCs took the opportunity to scare Brown Eyed Girls’ leader JeA, who ended up crying and elbowing the MC in the face.
After all of the commotion and everyone having a good laugh, Baekhyun continued on with the story— it turned out that the culprit was just the wind.
Baekhyun also explained that a strange voice of a woman can be heard on the music video of their debut single “MAMA“. He said that you can only hear it in the music video and not in the actual song. At a certain point in the music video, you can hear a women clearly say, “Thank you everyone” in Mandarin.
Lay chimed in saying that he got “moon skin”, breaking the tension and causing everyone to laugh. What he meant to say was “chicken skin” which is another way of saying goosebumps.
Listen to the real thing for yourself, around 4:15 you can here a ghost or an unknown woman’s voice saying “xie xie“. (Thank you in Mandarin.)
Also on the July 18th broadcast of tvN’s eNEWS, EXO shared some chilling tales of facing supernatural entities during their trip to Kazan, Russia, where the then twelve member group was invited to perform at the closing ceremony of the 2013 “Kazan Universiade Ceremony.”
When asked whether the members had experienced any ghost sightings before, Chanyeol relayed the following experience which had left both him and fellow member Chen in awe:
“We saw a Russian ghost – rather than actually seeing one, it was more of a unique, unusual aura and feeling. I shared a room with Chen, and I was sleeping normally until I had sleep paralysis. It was because of the ghost that I felt paralyzed. But then, the ghost moved on to Chen, and started to harass him, and I was really shocked when Chen started screaming ‘Please save me!’”
Another incident took place when the group was filming for the music video of “Growl” in a supposedly haunted warehouse at ShinDongShin Industrial High School in Seoul. The school holds the dubious honor of being ranked at the 8th spot in the “Top 10 Scariest Schools in Korea” list. The reason the school is feared is because of its notorious history of extreme violence issues and the high number of students committing suicide.
SM was previously warned not to use the warehouse but upon the agency’s insistence, the warehouse was opened for the first time in seven years. The reason it had been closed up for such a long time was because three students had simultaneously committed suicide there at the same time.
The filming started at 8 PM and ended at 3 AM. Before they started the shoot, some members has already felt something odd about the place.
Sehun heard his mother’s voice calling him awake, while Xiumin felt very sleepy, later taking vitamins and drinking coffee to wake himself up. Former member Luhan saw people inside the warehouse, however the staff had earlier informed him that the warehouse was empty and no one had been inside since a long time. Chanyeol said he saw Baekhyun running out of the warehouse, however the latter had been with D.O all along.
Main vocalist Minah relayed her heart-stopping encounter:
“I woke up at 6 in the morning and was showering when someone tried to open the door. I thought it might be one of the other members, so I called out, but there was no indication of anybody there, and then someone again was hitting the door hard. I gathered my courage and opened the door, but no one was there.”
Tony An of the now disbanded first generation idol group H.O.T spoke of what appeared to be a haunting, but later turned out to be something much more sinister:
“The most memorable incident for me was something that I’ve never talked about on broadcast before. I’ve always struggled with sleep paralysis but it was especially severe one particular night. I began to notice that whenever I was under sleep paralysis, I would always see this specific long-haired woman staring at me in my room.
One day, I came home tired from finishing my schedules so I washed and went straight to bed. While sleeping, I felt that something was weird but I thought I was under sleep paralysis again so I didn’t think much of it until I felt something touching my chest. I opened my eyes and saw that same woman stroking my chest.”
After finishing his first solo album recording, Tony An returned home earlier than usual and took a break while watching TV. He suddenly heard a sad melody begin playing in his room.
“I thought it was my cellphone but it wasn’t ringing and I kept hearing it ring in my home. I heard it coming from the kitchen in the cabinets under the sink. I mean, it’s under my sink… I felt scared but opened it anyway and found a woman sleeping in the cabinets. I was so surprised and found out that her cellphone had been ringing the whole time. I woke her up and when she turned around, I realized it was the same woman who had stroked my chest. At the time, I thought I was under sleep paralysis so I had gone back to sleep but after seeing her face, I realized what was happening.
I later found out that she had found out my apartment’s door lock number and had snooped around for a week. When I randomly came home early, she hid herself under the sink and accidentally fell asleep. I knew that she didn’t try or want to hurt me so I just woke her up and escorted her outside, telling her not to do this ever again.”
On the December 20th, 2011 broadcast of SBS‘ “Strong Heart“, singer IU shocked viewers by describing the following encounter:
“I saw a ghost during the recording of ‘You and I‘… the recording of the song was stopped for a little while due to AN ARGUEMENT with the producer, and I saw MY manager going into the recording studio; BUT when I checked, no one was there. The manager later came out from somewhere else.”
IU described another incident:
“I also saw a handsome ghost who stated ‘I love you’ in my ear during the recording of ‘Good Day‘ and AFTER seeing the ghost that laughed at me, I asked my entertainment company president to allow me to stay at home.”
On the July 17th, 2010 broadcast of KBS‘ “Star Golden Bell“, former member Lee Joon shared a real life story of his encounter with ghosts. According to him, when the group got back from their schedule and were in their dorm, he experienced a strange event. When Joon went to bed and was sleeping, a mysterious force pressed him down, suffocating him. He said,
“The ghost SMELLED LIKE cigarette smoke and WAS a female that SCREAMED a lot with a husky voice… Because of it, I HAD been getting serious dark circles because I Couldn’t sleep at night. I haD BEEN deprived of sleep and the ghost KEPT on visiting me AND that resulted in the dorm being sold at a cheap price”.
A picture of miss A’s maknae Suzy and a ghost was released through an online community and drew a lot of attention.
The picture was taken when Suzy and 2PM went to the Horrormaze at Everland in Yongin. A ghost was also spotted behind Suzy and captured the public’s attention.
Leader Hyosung said she had a brush with paranormal activity when she was a teen and the experience still haunts her.
“When I was 17, there was a particular night when I was very tired and had a nightmare. I heard some creepy voices and suddenly woke up and prayed to make the voices go away.”
Maknae Taemin described the following story:
“Ah, I recently saw a ghost! I clearly remember seeing Onew hyung in the living room. After that I went to the bathroom and opened the door. but the door was locked so I said: “Minho hyung! Minho hyung!” but it was Onew hyung in the bathroom the entire time!”
Another unexplainable incidence took place when Taemin was going down to the practice rooms by himself one night, when he heard piano sounds in the fourth practice room. He thought someone was there and opened the door but nobody was there, so he started running the opposite way because he was so scared— but suddenly there was a loud sound of piano keys crashing, but still, nobody was there.
Leader Onew also had an unsettling experience:
Fellow labelmate EXO‘s Chanyeol once told a story main vocalist Jonghyun had told him:
“Jonghyun senior said he was practicing at a practice room, and whenever he sang the ′sol′ while practicing ′do re mi fa sol fa mi re do′, a female voice would sing along.”
On the December 15th, 2009 broadcast of SBS‘ “Strong Heart“, SS501‘s leader Kim Hyunjoong stated,
“I’ve been disturbed because I constantly see and hear ghosts. … It’s a true story that happened in SS501’s dorm. One day I heard a unfamiliar voice.”
Ever since Hyunjoong heard the voices, he revealed that unexplainable events constantly happened. He then gave the cast goosebumps as he commented,
“On one night, I saw a thing that I shouldn’t have seen.”
Furthermore, it was revealed that Hyungjoong showed an unexpected change in behavior because of his sudden scare.
He also revealed that he had a confrontation with a ghost, explaining that there was a ghost that always visited his house. He also added the following statement, shocking many of the guests and the two MCs.
“I told it to leave, but it didn’t and we eventually lived together.”
On the June 26th, 2014 broadcast of MBC Everyone’s “Jung Bo Seok’s 1:00 a.m at Cheongdang Dong“, lead rapper Eunhyuk relayed the following story:
“While singing my part for recording, the director said that the melodies don’t sound right, and asked me to sing it over. It felt weird because I thought I got them right, but he kept asking me to sing it over.“
When he listened to the recorded music with the engineer, Eunhyuk said,
“The engineer director pointed out exactly where I got it wrong as if he were a psychic. I saw and worked with an engineer who seemed to have more supernatural powers than a ghost.“
On a July 2010 broadcast of the horror special of “Come to Play” maknae Jiyeon confessed:
“We moved out of our dorm after seeing a ghost there.”
She shared her story of coming face to face with a ghost:
“The day before T-ARA‘s debut, I felt as if something was pressing down on my body while I was sleeping.“
She explained that the ghost was of a skinny little child, who had her arms around her knees while sitting on a hanger (for clothes). The child ghost was nodding her head and looked as if she was trying to tell Jiyeon something.
“I tried my best to break out of the paralysis state, and when I finally did, I went over to Soyeon unnie and told her about it. She told me that she encountered the same ghost at the exact spot where I had seen it.“
Jiyeon also talked about another ghost experience during filming.
Former member Areum made headlines after her “demonic possession” posts and bizarre behavior after leaving the group on Instagram.
“My birthday. It passed 1 minute ago. Dear the Republic of Korea, please wait. The pain that I want to kill the most. Everyone, you’re having a hard time because of thaT TOO, right? Just wait a little bit.”
But Areum’s known birthday was April 19, and the fans were confused. She also wrote:
“I am Areum and I do what I say I’ll do. I lived with the most positive attitude. The wish that I had was the happiness of the world. It’s not far away so keep smiling. You must. I promise you. Please promise me. Smile first.”
Areum left T-ARA in July and many were suspicious of her receiving a “calling from the gods.” The rumours were denied, but Areum’s disturbing posts and scary pictures with bloody nail art were rearousing public curiosity. Internet users’ comments ranged from pity to fear, “I’m seriously concerned for her,” “I want to see her bright again,” and “Why is she doing this?”
Areum later stated,
“I will reveal the truth behind the rumors of being sick that surrounded me. No one knows but the son that my aunt never had possessed me for a bit.”
She claimed that she was an actual person who goes through the things in the past drama, “Master’s Sun” and that she has known about the existence of ghosts since middle school. She also claimed to have saved a friend’s life through a séance in the past.
“Ghosts are precious superstitions. When we die, we become ghosts too so why are you afraid of yourselves! Today will pass and tomorrow will come so let’s just smile and hold hands in a circle.”
Areum also confessed her inner pain by saying,
“If I were to keep being depressed and not cool, I would have already died! Although it does hurt because I can’t die since that’s just who I am. If I realized that 20 is the peak and the age to smile and shine, I would have quickly found positive energy and happiness…”
In the end, Areum made a reference to a childhood cartoon movie and said,
“Everyone, try falling into your memories~”
The video she posted contained footage of her pet dog, a screen that had the words, “I am the god of Mi. Mi of beauty” as well as her face. “Mi” can also mean “unfinished” in Korean.
Areum seemed to be mentioning the rumor of being sick since several news agencies reported about it when she left T-ARA. However, the group’s agency Core Contents Media revealed that Areum being sick was not the reason for her departure.
But Areum started posting some mysterious things onto her Instagram over the course of several months, which led to the rumors of her being sick to start up again. Many netizens expressed concern over her cryptic posts and wondered if she needed to receive help.
The Instagram video that immortalised this event supposedly shows Areum’s ghost friend.
Later Areum’s mother claimed that the singer was doing well, and assured fans not to worry.
On February 11th, 2015 Teen Top‘s main vocalist Niel was featured on Naver‘s “Star Cast” with pictures and videos of Niel at his music video set.
The other members of the group visited him and took pictures with the Teen Top logo. Many fans cheered for him and left heart warming messages. However, one fan noticed something was off in some of the pictures. In the pictures below there appears a strange face in the window.
The original poster of the article on Instiz stated,
“It moves ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ
There isn’t much difference in the angles of the camera but it moves ㅠㅠㅠ it’s scary ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ”
Many fans however, seemed to welcome the appearance of this alleged ghost because as stated before, in Korean entertainment business there is a superstitious belief that, if an album is visited by a ghost, it always succeeds.
In a statement released by Teen Top’s agency T.O.P Media on February 13th, it was revealed that the figure was not directed under any circumstances. They further stated,
“We have received a lot of inquiries from fans. We didn’t find out about the incident until the photos were released. The photos were not staged at all.”
It was also revealed that the room by the window was a space full of costumes but the staff were unaware of the incident at the time of the filming.
Yunho sees ghosts frequently and is very scared of them. Former member
“There’s this once when Yunho saw a ghost and he cried really loud.”
“No. The truth is like this… I was walking and I was in a bad mood. Then I saw a girl holding a doll, and she didn’t LOOK like those KINDs of ghosts on TV.”
Former member Yoochun said,
“I was all the while beside him and I cried as well, although I didn’t see the ghost.”
Choo Sarang‘s father, Choo Sunghoon once saw a ghost on a street intersection when he was a teenager. He was waiting for the traffic signal to turn green. He looked at the other side of the street, and saw a good looking guy. In his mind though, he thought that the guy looked like a ghost. After the signal turned green, as he was passing by the good looking guy he saw earlier, the latter suddenly whispered to him,
“How did you know?”
